Marafona (PT)

José Carlos Marafon is a Portuguese football goalkeeper, but also a rag doll from the Montesanto area, which is attributed the power to protect homes against storms. The five-member band from Lisboa betting on acoustic instruments as well as traditional songs was named after it. They reflect their journeys to places where the tradition is still maintained and they explore their own roots with an inspiration from the Portuguese folk and fado – the melancholic and emotional ballads. Marafon is attempting to transfer the neglected heritage to the present and strives for a link between the cultural memory of Portugal and the music of today. “It’s not folk, it’s not classical music, it’s not jazz, blues, pop or poetry,” they say about their debut EP Tia Miséria of 2014. “There’s a little bit of everything.”
